Valentine’s DIY Advent Calendar
I can’t believe we’re two weeks shy of February!! And that the holidays are over! The Christmas decor is officially put away, and out comes Valentine’s Day.
I was recently at Target, I mean I think we’re all pretty aware of the fact that I’m usually at Target. But I was there checking out all the fun Dollar spot goodies. When I spotted this cute Valentine’s Day kindness countdown.
I absolutely loved the idea that I could use Valentine’s Day as a way to teach my kids to give back. Bringing this adorable kindness advent calendar home it had me thinking. I wanted to find a way to customize the acts of kindness to fit our family.
Which is where I came up with my own Valentine’s advent calendar. This DIY countdown calendar can be used many ways. Acts of kindness, reasons why I love you, or just a Valentine’s countdown.
I picked up all of the supplies I needed from hobby lobby, and finished this project in less than a day. To be honest it probably would’ve taken me about an hour, but the kids were super crazy.
Supplies
- Felt hearts
- Yarn
- Scissors
- Craft paint
- Frame
- Twine
- Glue gun and glue
- Paint brush
Felt Hearts
These felt hearts are from hobby lobby in their Valentine’s Day section. The best part they’re also 40% off. They come 12 in a package, since we need to make 14 heart pockets, 3 packages are needed.
Taking two felt hearts, and a piece of yarn about two feet long start by making a knot close to the top. Leaving enough room for an opening. Then simply lace to the other side. Once all the hearts are laced up, I secured with some hot glue.
Adding Numbers
The next step to do was get the hearts numbered. Using black craft paint, a round sponge brush, and stencils (again all from hobby lobby) I numbered from 1 to 14, and let dry.
Frame
Letting the numbers dry, I started working on the frame. The open frame I found at hobby lobby for 50% off making it around $13 dollars. I used a 16×20 open frame. Before I attached the twine I took, and laid out the hearts in the frame, to figure out where to glue the twine. Once that was figured out, I simply glued the twine on with hot glue.
Using clips I attached attached the hearts to the twine!
14 Acts of Kindness
This calendar can definitely be used for multiple purposes, but we’re gonna use it for our acts of kindness. I sat down and I really thought hard about some of these acts of kindness. I didn’t want to make any that would be to hard for my younger kids, but I also wanted to include my 14 year old. Below are the 14 acts of kindness, we’re going to try this year.
- Donate Toys, Clothes, Etc
- Smile at everyone you see
- Call someone to say Hello
- Write a note to a friend or family member
- Draw a picture or make a craft for someone in your family
- Leave money in a vending machine
- Give everyone in your family a compliment
- Donate to a animal shelter
- Deliver treats to Police/Fire Station
- Clean up garbage around your neighborhood
- Donate Hats and Gloves
- Say Hello to someone new at school
- Make Mom/Dad Coffee or Tea
- Leave a treat at a neighbors door
Diy Calendar made, Acts of kindness ready to go!! I am really excited to work on this little advent calendar with the kids this February. Im interested to see what our results are!!
