DIY Fleece Tie Knot Blankets

I’m not going to complain, but did it get cold fast or what?! Does it happen every year like this and I just forget? Well either way with it getting cooler out it’s time to snuggle under the blankets with a cup of hot cocoa. And I love a good blanket and a cup of hot cocoa!

I was recently in Hobby Lobby with Emma, (My youngest) and as we were strolling the aisles she spotted Minnie Mouse fleece. She acted like this was the coolest thing she’d ever seen in her 22 months of life. She had to have this damn fleece, so in the back of my mind I knew what I had to do. I was going home to make a tie knot fleece blanket.

Is It 2003!?

I know, You’re probably wondering, why are you writing about these diy blankets? My grandma made me 7 back in 2003, right?!? Well, I went home and freely enlisted into slavery. Slaving over this tie knot blanket as she literally yelled at me. I have to tell you even with her yelling at me she was so excited about making this blanket with me. Or watching me make her a blanket.

So why am I doing a DIY on these tie knot blankets?!? Because I forgot how awesome they are!!

  1. It’s fun(in some weird way) to let the kids help make these blankets.
  2. They make great gifts
  3. They’re great for car and travel
  4. Sick days, perfect blankets for those sick days
  5. Great for the sports fields
  6. Super comfy
  7. Easy to make

Supplies

  • Fleece (one and a half yards is perfect for a throw blanket)
  • Fabric scissors

Lay out the Fleece

I have to say, I made my youngest daughter the Minnie blanket first. Immediately after it was done Lincoln, my 3-year-old, HAD to have one. The next day we were at hobby lobby buying more fabric. I’ll add, she also loved going and picking out her own fleece.

But the first thing you’ ll want to do is lay the fabric out on a flat surface. Lay the bottom piece and the top piece together wrong sides together. I used 1 yard for my youngest, and a yard and a half for my 3-year-old.

Cut the Fleece

After the fleece is laid out  trim around the edges to make sure the fabric is even (I did not do this on either of the two and they came out fine).cut out about a 3×3 square off of the corners. and then along the edge you cut about 3 inch by 1 inch strips.

Tie the knots

I would cut one side and then do the knots, when I was done I would then cut and tie the next side. When you’re tying make sure you double knot so the knots don’t come undone.

Now that I’ve expressed my excitement over these super easy blankets. I’m bringing fleece blankets back ( I just sang that in the Justin Timberlake Sexy back tone) All you other blankets don’t know how to act.

OKAY that’s out of my system… Run to the local craft store, or amazon prime some fleece and get your snuggle on this weekend!
