How to Start a Garden From Seed

| |

It’s Spring in the Midwest!! And every year I grow a little more invested in my garden! It’s my favorite way to relax!!

Starting a garden from seed can be a rewarding and fulfilling experience. Not only does it give you a sense of accomplishment, but it also allows you to witness the entire growth process from start to finish. If you’re new to gardening or just looking to try something new, starting a garden from seed is a great way to get started.

First, you’ll need to decide what type of plants you want to grow. Whether it’s flowers, vegetables, or herbs, there are endless possibilities when it comes to starting a garden from seed. Consider your climate, the amount of sunlight your garden receives, and the amount of space you have available when choosing what to plant.

Next, you’ll need to gather your supplies. You’ll need seeds, seed starting trays or pots, a seed starting mix, and a light source. You can find seeds at your local garden center or online, and seed starting trays and pots can be found at most gardening stores. Seed starting mix or pellets is a lightweight soil mix that provides the perfect environment for seeds to germinate and grow. I prefer the pellets, since you just add warm water and add the seeds! And don’t forget a light source – whether it’s a sunny windowsill or a grow light – your seeds will need plenty of light to thrive.

As your seedlings grow, you’ll need to gradually acclimate them to the outdoors. This process, known as hardening off, involves gradually exposing your seedlings to the outdoor elements to help them adjust before transplanting them into your garden. Start by placing your seedlings outside for a few hours a day, gradually increasing the time they spend outdoors until they are ready to be planted in your garden. Usually Mid May, I usually find myself planting the weekend after Mother’s Day. Or any day after May 15th.

Once your seedlings are ready, it’s time to transplant them into your garden. Choose a sunny spot with well-draining soil and plant your seedlings according to the spacing recommendations on the seed packet. Water them well after planting and keep the soil moist until they are established.

Starting a garden from seed may take a little more time and effort than buying established plants, but the rewards are well worth it. Not only will you save money, but you’ll also have the satisfaction of knowing that you grew your garden from start to finish!!
