Holiday Safety Tips With Rainbow International©

| | |

Well, it happened again… I blinked and now it’s the holiday season!! How, what, why, when?! Where did the year go?! I just can’t believe I’ll be wrapping presents to put under the Christmas tree in a few short days!

Speaking of Christmas trees, and Christmas lights… I thought this would be a perfect opportunity to talk holiday safety. I’m a huge safety nut. Maybe it’s my anxiety, maybe because in my previous life I was a safety coordinator. Either way it drives Rob crazy, but hey, you can never be too safe!!

Every Holiday season I like to go over safety basics in my home, so this year I partnered with Rainbow International Restoration© to bring you some useful tips and tricks. It’s easy to forget, and overlook, especially now that our world is running mostly digitally. And personally, I rely on Alexa and my phone more than I would really like to admit. Putting this blog together to remind myself, as well as hopefully help others avoid disaster this holiday season

About Rainbow International©

Since I’m partnering with Rainbow International Restoration© this holiday season; I thought it would only be right to give a little background information on them. They are a Neighborly© company, that provides residential and commercial restoration, and cleaning services. They offer a bunch of damage repairs from water, smoke, and fire damage. Having been around since 1981 and have more than 420 locations worldwide, making them a pretty amazing company for any restoration issues that might arise.

Candles

Safety chat # 1 candles! I burn candles all the time, and even more during the holidays!! I just want it to smell like Christmas magic alllll day every day!! A few things to keep in mind when burning candles, it’s recommended to only burn a candle one hour a day, to prevent the build up of soot in your home.

Make sure candles aren’t left burning for more than an hour think about investing in a diffuser

Trimming the wick of a candle a quarter inch before you light the candle is also helpful. It will not only prevent soot, but you’ll get a longer and cleaner burn for your candles.

Essential Oils

Because I love the smell of scented candles, but don’t want the build up of soot or forget I lit one, and with a houseful of children have an accident happen. I also rely on essential oils for cleaning, and a handful of other home remedies.

One of my favorite and most beneficial essential oils in my home

I’m a huge essential oil user, I’ve been using them since I was a kid. It’s something my mother was big on. I don’t sell them, I usually buy them from Amazon (tip: read careful in the description to make sure you’re getting a good quality) or my local fruitful yield store (holistic store). Essential oils are great in a diffuser. I have a few diffusers in my home on each floor.

One of my favorite essential oils is lemon, it’s a great scent to clean with, put in a diffuser or if you burn something in the kitchen it can take away the smell fast! Peppermint is another great one, it makes your home smell wonderful and helps tremendously with headaches. Lavender, for relaxing, and eucalyptus if you’re feeling sick. Those are a few essential oils I keep on hand at all times.

Electrical Outlets and devices

My favorite safety discussion! And I think that it’s one of the most important, and overlooked. I can not stress enough in my home how scared I am of extension cords.

I don’t know what happened in my previous life, but they scare me. Number one reminder don’t use them for a long time fix. And if possible use a surge protector instead of an extension cord

Keeping outside lights on timers to ensure they aren’t being left on for long periods

Another way we try to imply electrical safety is having no more than three strings of lights on a tree, that helps to not overload an outlet.

Keeping only two strands of lights plugged making sure I’m not overloading an outlet

And lastly making sure outlets are away from flammable materials, such as cleaning supplies, rugs, blankets.

Tips and Tricks

With everything we have going on daily it’s easy to overlook and forget. I mean… it’s a trying time, and now adding the holidays to the mix it’s hard to stay organized, and on top of it all.

Remember to trim candle wicks 1/4 inch

I try to add everything I possibly can to Alexa! I know between Siri, google home, Amazon Alexa there are a handful of apps and resources to help. Adding reminders to Alexa to change out air filter monthly, turn the lights off, and more help me stay organized, and remember these little tasks.

Keeping a to do pad to jot down all those reminders that pop into my brain

We also have outlet plugs and switches in our home that can be controlled by a home assistant (Alexa,Siri, google home). That way I can have Alexa control/program the lights, and set, so I don’t forget to turn a tree off, or a light. (The worst is getting upstairs for bed and forgetting one light downstairs!). Lastly I try to opt for battery operated that run on timers. Not only do I not have to worry about outlets and electric, they turn themselves on, and off!

Happy Holidays to you all!!! Enjoy them with your loved ones and be safe! If you have any safety tips you use to make your life easier, please comment below. I would love to hear them!
